The LA Rams Trades - A Season in Review

Since it's recently come into question, the IShoe league historical society looks back at the trades of one Anthony Khoury, owner of the snake-bitten LA Rams for the 2010 season:

1) LA Rams acquire: Peyton Manning and Santana Moss from Bafana Bafana for Jay Cutler and Joseph Addai.

Do'hs!! - 1 (on a scale of 1-10 do'hs, with 1 being no regrets, 10 being a horrible deal). A fantastic trade for the Rams, they acquire a franchise QB and decent WR2 for not much.

2) LA Rams acquire: Antonio Gates from ~melonheads for Dez Bryant and John Carlson.

Do'hs - 1. Another great deal by Anthony - Gates had a tremendous year, clearly the #1 TE and one of the most valuable players in fantasy. Bryant ended up having a few good games, and has lots of potential, but Gates was a worthy piece to add.

3) LA Rams acquire: Andre Johnson, Fred Taylor, Kevin Walter, and Fred Jackson from the Manimals for Darren McFadden, Brandon Jackson, Michael Bush, and Dwayne Bowe.

Do'hs - 6. Although Andre Johnson continued to play like a top-5 WR and Fred Jackson played great football over the 2nd half of the season, the Raiders tandem was a reliable every-week startable team over the entire season. The worst part is that Dwayne Bowe (since traded) ended up as the top fantasy WR, but that was impossible to forsee at the time.

4) LA Rams acquire: Steve Smith (NYG) and Ryan Grant from Castro for Santana Moss.

Do'hs - 1. Another good deal, as Smith is a startable WR2 (when healthy) and Grant could be a nice piece for 2011. Moss is nearing the end of his usefulness in fantasy.

5) LA Rams acquire: Austin Collie and DeAngelo Williams from Stavros for Andre Johnson and Ryan Grant.

Do'hs - 5. At the time, it appeared to be acquiring 2 startable players for one great one (Johnson). However, Collie had begun to decline and he was a great slot receiver, but still only out there on 3 WR sets. Williams had not been good all year for Carolina, then went on IR and was released in our league.

6) LA Rams acquire: Miles Austin, Mike Tolbert, and Beanie Wells from Stavros for Calvin Johnson, Ronnie Brown, and Matt Stafford.

Do'hs - 5. Probably a wash, but Cal Johnson is simply more talented that Austin. Tolbert and Wells were nice additions - better probably than Brown, and Stafford was a speculative play.

7) LA Rams acquire: Steve Smith, Tim Hightower, Pierre Thomas, and Brandon Jacobs from Brian for Mike Williams, Knowshon Moreno, and Jason Snelling.

Do'hs - 3. Probably a good deal for the future, although Smith was released. The 3 backup RB's are all knocking on the door of startable status, but Moreno has been a top-10 back since joining Brian.

8) LA Rams acquire: Justin Forsett from Castro for Mike Tolbert.

Do'hs - 7. Tolbert is simply better than Forsett, and in a much better situation.

The verdict? Although most of the trades were pretty good ones, the release of some of the key parts (Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams) and the Tolbert trade downgrade the overall score. As with any team, there were some great trades (esp early on), and then a few that didn't work out as well later on. However, the IShoe society cannot say with any certainty that it was poor trading that did in the Rams season.

Other Notable Deals:

The season was probably defined by two trades that did not involve Anthony.

Trade 1: Castro acquire Maurice Jones-Drew and Dwayne Bowe from Manimals for Ryan Mathews and Malcom Floyd. Quite simply, this trade turned around the season for potentially playoff-bound Castro. MJD was sensational since he joined Castro, and Castro got all of the best performances from Bowe after the deal, in which he became the #1 fantasy WR in a matter of weeks. On the flip side, Mathews was hurt and struggled, and Floyd was also hurt until recently. A home run of a trade for the Castro, and quite possibly kept the Manimals from making a playoff run.

Trade 2: AJFA acquire Jay Cutler and Ray Rice from Bafana for Matt Ryan, CJ Spiller, Mike Wallace, and Bernard Scott. Rarely do top-5 caliber backs get traded mid-season, but the Rice trade gave AJFA a legitimate RB weapon. Although Rice was disappointing (at least for TD's), the trade probably helped both teams as Wallace continued to play like a top-10 WR. It remains to be seen how Spiller's career plays out (I've predicted failure for him), but if he's a starting RB, this is a classic trade that's good for both teams.
