Mike Matos (pictured on right) and his franchise, And Justice For All, were the lucky winners of the Ronnie Brown sweepstakesNot since Bill O'Neil's legendary chili cook-off has one event so captured the attention and imagination of the entire WashU community as the intense bidding over free agent runningback Ronald Brown.
"Bill O'Neil was a great man- a great man- but the Brown bidding is bigger than anything he could have pulled off." proclaimed Borgnine Emerson.
"Fucking Ronnie Brown man- this is going to be awesome!" commented oregano dealer Tim Maloney.
"I got so excited I just started whacking off on a homeless man!" exclaimed Zack Radford.
"I'm going to get Ronnie to autograph my bicycle hat because I am so edgy and down!" noted edgy and down WashU grad Luke Picnicky.
As a rookie, Brown was drafted by Douglas Good's Bavarian All-Stars and signed to a lucrative and incentive-laden contract. As Good's mental health deteriorated, so too did his relationship with Brown. Good and Brown engaged in a heated argument over deep dish Chicago pizza cooking styles, and Good subsequently announced that Brown's career as a Bavarian All-Star was over. Good mockingly referred to the runningback as "Ronnie soon-to-be-Lippman Brown" although it was unclear what that meant. Regardless, Brown was traded to the Kapitalizm Stompers for Cadillac Williams shortly before the 2007 season. Brown dealt with a series of injuries during his tenure with the Stompers, but no one could deny that he was very effective when healthy. After a season-ending injury in Week 12 of the 2009 season, the Stompers made a controversial decision and cut Brown.
The Stompers released a cliche-ridden public statement soon after cutting Brown:
"Ronnie was a professional while he was here and we are very thankful for his contributions to the Kapitalizm Stompers family. Unfortunately, Ronnie was beset by a series of injuries, and at this stage we are not ready to go forward with Ronnie on our roster. We wish Ronnie the best, and we are sure that he will find success wherever he goes."
And Justice For All landed Brown for a blind bid of $111.
"We are unequivocally, unflinchingly and unambiguosly pleased to announce the acquisition Mr. Ronald Brown. This has been a disappointing season for AJFA, but the Brown signing provides a silver lining to our season. We look ahead to the 2010 season with the goal of a championship, and we think Mr. Brown and John Jay will be big parts of our plans for next year." stated AJFA owner Mike Matos.
His co-owner Will Joyce was less excited. "Are you guys still doing that fantasy league from law school? You know, the one with the salary cap? Do we still have Bulger?" asked Joyce.
Although Joyce's question went unanswered, the Ronnie Brown bidding went as follows:
1. AJFA $111
2. Stavros $93
3. Bafana $81
4. LA Rams $62
5. Manimals $34
